Coming soon to NowHere on October 27, we're excited to host a mini one-night-only Asian-American film festival of four shorts—all curated by NYC-based Asian-American filmmaker Emily May Jampel. These four selected short films explore the facets of growth and transition, each directed by an emerging Asian-American artist, including Livia Huang, Katarina Zhu, and Annie Ning. Space is limited and drinks/refreshments will be served, so secure your spot asap.

Emily May Jampel ( Filmmaker, Curator )
Emily is a filmmaker and curator from Oʻahu based in New York City. Her short film Lucky Fish has won awards at festivals around the world including Palm Springs, Champs-Élysées and the San Diego Asian Film Festival. She has curated film programs for Metrograph, Allies in Arts, Brooklyn Art Haus, and previously worked as a development executive at the Academy Award-Nominated production company The Department of Motion Pictures. Emily is a 2023 recipient of NewFest’s New Voices Filmmaker Grant presented in partnership with Netflix.

Livia Huang
Livia Huang is a film director from Baltimore, currently based in New York. She was a recipient of a 2018 Flies Collective Film Grant and a 2022 NewFest New Voices Filmmaker Grant, and her short films have screened at Berlinale, IFFR, New Directors/New Films and more. She holds a MFA from Brooklyn College and a BA from Columbia University.

Katarina Zhu
Katarina Zhu is a filmmaker, actor and editor based in NYC. She graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2018 with a BFA in acting. She spent her primary years focused on acting training before pivoting to academic semesters to further explore her interests in film and creative writing. After graduating, she fostered these interests by writing, directing and editing her own short films. Most recently, she was selected as an inaugural fellow for the Women in Film Shorts Lab supported by Google. Currently, she works as a freelance video editor with a background in beauty with clients spanning from Glossier to Pat McGrath. As a filmmaker, her work is mainly concerned with loss, love and the haunting that is inevitably borne of both experiences. As a second generation Chinese-American, she is always looking at these themes through the lens of someone whose identity and belief system are rooted in two, often conflicting, cultures.

Annie Ning
Annie Ning is a filmmaker from Suzhou, China, currently based in NYC. She graduated from Wesleyan University with a B.A. in Film and English, and pursues an M.F.A in Screenwriting/Directing at Columbia University. She was a 2020 Fellow at the Creative Visions Foundation Women Excel Project, & the BAVC Serial Storyteller Program in development of a hybrid docu-series on end of life care in China. Her first short film, Fishbowl, can be found on NoBudge. She is part of the women-led production company Rai Productions, producing and editing work for clients such as Vogue China, Tory Burch, EDAS, & Eny Lee Parker.
