Join us for an exclusive artist talk event featuring photographer, Fumi Nagasaka, and her subject, Diahmin Hawkins, where as they engage in an intimate and insightful conversation about Hawkins’ life experience in her hometown Alabama, and the process behind capturing a powerful photograph currently on exhibit.

During the event, Nagasaka and Hawkins will discuss Hawkins’ life story and how it influenced the creation of Nagasaka’s works. Hawkins will share her journey, struggles, and triumphs, providing a unique perspective on the human experience.

Through this conversation, the audience will gain a deeper appreciation for the art of portraiture and how it can be used to tell a story beyond just capturing an image. The event will also provide an opportunity to explore the bond between photographer and subject, and how that relationship can lead to a striking portrait that captures the essence of a person's life.

The event will conclude with a Q&A session where attendees can ask questions and engage with both the photographer and the subject.

Fumi Nagasaka

Fumi Nagasaka is a Japanese-born photographer who moved to New York in 2002 to explore North American culture. She began working as a freelance photographer for the Japanese cult magazine Street in 2003 and has since traveled around Europe and the United States taking documentary photographs. Nagasaka is known for her extensive history in street casting and her ability to capture the essence of the people she photographs. Her work has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery as part of the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize, and she was the winner of the Belfast Photo Festival in 2019.

Diahmin Hawkins

Diahmin Hawkins was born in Birmingham, Alabama and raised in Dora, Alabama. She faced many challenges growing up in a limited environment, but found strength in God, family, and her love for mathematics. Her failures taught her the value of hard work and dedication, while her successes motivated her to keep challenging herself. She is now a Bridge to Ph.D Scholar at Columbia University studying the effects of the Opioid Epidemic, and has been accepted into Brown University's Biostatistics Master's Program with a full ride scholarship, as well as receiving a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.
